When children face demanding situations, such as competitions or exams, their bodies produce stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones can heighten alertness, improve focus, and increase energy levels—qualities that can enhance performance. However, when stress becomes overwhelming, it can lead to anxiety, fatigue, and a decline in performance. The key lies in helping children find the right balance.

Start by fostering an environment where children feel safe to express their feelings about stress. Encourage open conversations about their experiences, fears, and expectations. Visualization is another powerful tool that can enhance performance while managing stress. Guide children through the process of visualizing success. Ask them to close their eyes and imagine themselves in a competitive scenario, performing at their best. Encourage them to engage all their senses—what do they see, hear, and feel? This mental rehearsal not only builds confidence but also reduces anxiety by familiarizing them with the situation before it occurs.

Moreover, help children develop a growth mindset, which is the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. When children understand that setbacks are part of the learning process, they are less likely to feel overwhelmed by stress. Encourage them to reflect on past challenges and how they overcame them. Finally, recognize the importance of balance. Encourage children to engage in activities outside of their primary sport or academic focus. Hobbies, social interactions, and downtime are vital for mental well-being and can serve as effective stress relievers. By promoting a well-rounded lifestyle, you help children build resilience and improve their overall performance.
